Open Source and Free Online Options:

Wordle & Tagxedo

Both Wordle and Tagxedo take a collection of words, articles, speeches, slogans and places them into an elaborate word cloud.  The difference between Wordle and Tagxedo is that when using Wordle, a word cloud is created placing each word in an undefined cloud.  Tagxedo allows the user to place the words into a predetermined shape.  If your desired shape is not within the library, a new shape can be added.

  1. I was familiar with Wordle from previous classes, but the ability to form a shape with Tagxedo is really exciting. That ability would allow the user to make connections and enhance learning. The examples, such as the bear and Abe Lincoln, show how students could use this to summarize topical research and presentations. Thank you for sharing.

  2. My ESOL students love to take new vocabulary words and use Wordle and Tagxedo. I have enjoyed following your blog during this class. Best of luck to you in the future. Have a great summer. Kelley

  3. I've use Wordle before in my classroom. I had my students list words that had to do with art or creating art. The final creations came out well and I liked that you could randomize each one and critique what we liked or didn't about each one. A great way to discuss emphasis and contrast. I agree with Sue, that the ability to form a shape using the Tagxedo makes it more versatile.
